Vince Lombardi, one of the most revered coaches in American sports history, once said, "Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all-the-time thing. You don't win once in a while... you don't do things right once in a while... you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit."
This idea—"winning is a habit"—holds immense power. It speaks to a profound truth: our habits define our success or failure.
Habits, whether they are empowering or limiting, shape our journey. Positive habits propel us toward our goals, while negative habits pull us further from our potential.
As the Cambridge Dictionary defines, a habit is "something you do often and regularly." In essence, habits are consistent behaviours we build into our lives every single day.
Consistency is the Key
Let’s focus on the word 'consistent' because it's the cornerstone of success.
When we set a goal, we must take action to achieve it. That action becomes sustainable when it evolves into a habit, and habits are born from consistent, positive behaviours.
Everyone has dreams, but not everyone follows through with the daily actions needed to realize them. For example, hitting the snooze button is a habit, just as getting up at 5 a.m. to work on your passion project or train at the gym is a habit. These two choices lead to vastly different outcomes.
The main reason people don't achieve their dreams is inconsistency. In my coaching practice, I've noticed the difference between those who excel and those who stagnate comes down to one thing: consistency.
Building Consistent, Positive Habits
It’s not the sporadic efforts that bring us closer to our goals; it’s the actions we take consistently—every day, every hour, every minute. Positive habits extend beyond the workplace or a single aspect of life; they become ingrained in our entire being.
As a coach, my role is to help you identify the habits and behaviours that will make you a champion in your own life. I teach three core pillars of habits to my clients—each as important as the next. Once these habits are identified, the next step is practicing them with unwavering dedication.
1. Self-care habits: Daily rituals that nurture mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. These could include activities like daily walking, practicing mindfulness, or meditating.
2. Growth habits: Actions that expand your potential. This could involve reading, learning, working with a coach, and engaging in self-reflection—anything that fosters knowledge and self-awareness.
3. Professional habits: The daily behaviours necessary for success in your chosen field. Whether it’s getting up early to train if you're an athlete, or dedicating time each day to outreach if you’re a sales manager.
Your ability to build consistent habits is more critical than any objectives you set. If you commit to doing something consistently, you’ll uncover potential within yourself that you never imagined. Consistency is the path to peak performance and realizing your highest potential.
So, what can you do every day to bring yourself closer to your dreams? Whatever it is, do it with consistency! After all, what we do in the shadows will eventually shine in the light.
